In 1961 construction commenced on a new Control Tower at Sydney/Bankstown aerodrome. Along with Melbourne/Moorabbin, Bankstown is Australia's busiest airport in terms of movement numbers. As well as a large General Aviation component, in the 1960s Bankstown was also home to a significant aircraft manufacturing industry that included de Havilland Australia and final assembly of the Victa Airtourer.
